James Sand designed what he thought was a sailboat with auxiliary oars, only to discover it was actually a rowboat with auxiliary sails! In Facing Aft he tells of his many adventures (and a few misadventures) rowing in the waters of Puget Sound, and how he even rounded Cape Horn.
